Henrik Lundqvist Askmen.com Interview

New York Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist is a Vezina Trophy winner, a three-time All-Star and an Olympic gold medalist. In just a few weeks, he’ll be looking to add to his collection as he leads Team Sweden on their quest to medal in men’s hockey at the 2014 Winter Olympics.
On the ice, Lundqvist stands out for his stellar play, and he’s undoubtedly one of the best goaltenders of this generation. Off the ice, Lundqvist has become a style icon for his impeccable fashion. We caught up with one of the best-dressed men in the NHL to get some tips:

Your style is constantly evolving. What have you learned about fashion in the last 6 months to a year?

I want to say that my style has been pretty consistent. It hasn’t changed over the last five or six years. I had a period in my life where it changed every four or five months. It was a lot of weird looks — even bad ones, I want to say — but I guess you learn from your mistakes. As I got older, I found my style. I found what I like to wear, I feel comfortable in it. Nowadays I don’t really change much, so I don’t know if I’ve learned anything — I don’t know if that’s a good or bad thing.

You dress very classy and composed, but it seems like a modern-day trend is the hipster look. What’s your opinion of it?

Well, can you explain to me the typical hipster look just so we’re on the same page. What does the hipster look mean for you?

Kind of the “I did my hair but I don’t want you to know that I did my hair,” retro clothing, thick-framed/nerdy-type glasses and sometime the glasses are fake with non-prescription lenses. And plaid seems to be in fashion among hipsters, fading jeans… that type of thing.

I get what you said. The key for hipsters is that they usually try really hard but the important thing is they want to come across like they don’t try. To make it look effortless. I don’t mind. It really fits New York, the hipster look. I love that about New York: You just dress the way you want to dress and feel really comfortable because nobody is judging. You can just be yourself and it’s perfectly normal.

Which of your teammates on the Rangers would you say is most in need of fashion advice?

I’m not going to name names but there’s one guy that I keep coming back to because his shirts were just awful. He gave me heat for my skinny ties and my tight suits, but thinking back to his shirts, they were not very pretty looking.

What’s your favorite watch?

I have two watches that I really like wearing right now. One is a Hublot and one is an IWC. They work really well on an off-day when I’m not dressed up, but also work really well with the suits that I wear five days a week. I like watches like that, watches that can be used for both looks.

You’ve mentioned in the past that you’ve made — and learned from — a number of your fashion mistakes. What are some common fashion mistakes that you see these days?

It really comes down to fit. When it comes to a suit, for example, it’s important that the shoulders fit you well, the length of the pants are important. That kind of shows me right away if you’re into it or if you don’t care. If they get the shoulders right, you know that they have some sort of interest in getting a good look.

Other than those points there, do you have any advice for buying a suit?

For me, it’s not about getting the right brand. It’s about getting a suit and then… you always have to touch it up. It doesn’t matter what brand you buy. For the most part, I always take it to a person here in the city to get the adjustment so that it fits exactly the way I want. Don’t focus too much on the perfect brand, because it’s more about getting the perfect fit.

Could you talk about your relationship with Advil?

I teamed up with Advil a couple of months ago and we actually just finished shooting a great commercial a couple of weeks ago. One of the reasons I teamed up with them is because speed is important to me as an NHL goalie and fast-acting Advil definitely helps me recover fast, too.

We do a feature where we ask men all over the world to vote on the Top 99 most desirable women in the world. You’ve got a trained eye for the matter, so I’m wondering who you would say are some of the more stylish female celebrities who stand out in Hollywood or otherwise?

I think Jennifer Lawrence seems to really get it right when she’s on the red carpet. So maybe I’ll vote for her. She’s had a number of good movies lately and every time you see a picture of her on the red carpet you, she looks like she knows what she’s doing.

Hope you and the Rangers win the Stanley Cup this year — I know that would mean a lot to you — and good luck to you in Sochi.

Thanks a lot, I appreciate that.
