Henrik Lundqvist is One of GQ Magazine's 25 Most Stylish Men of 2013

15. Henrik Lundqvist
Move over NBA players, Henrik Lundqvist has proven time and time again that hockey players can dress just as well as the most swagged-out ballers. The Rangers goalkeep knows his way around a trim-tailored suit and skinny sports jacket, always finished off with a skinny tie, and brings the same sleekness to his downtime rigs. What seals it all together is a consistently well-groomed head of hair that obviously hasn't succumbed to the perils of spending most of its time under a helmet.

Henrik Lundqvist Will Not Change His Lifestyle Because of New Contract; Had No Thoughts of Moving Elsewhere

ShareThis

LOS ANGELES . A seven-year contract worth approximately SEK 385 million . Henrik Lundqvist , 31, got his new dream contract with the New York Rangers yesterday.
But he thinks not start throwing money around .
- No, there will be no drastic stuff. I 'm not going to change my lifestyle and I'll be honest , I have earned the right okay for several years , he says to SPORT-Expressen .

The new annual salary from the 2014-15 season will be SEK 55 million .
- It feels good to have this done and it was in both mine and the club's interest to get it done. From my side , there were no thoughts to move elsewhere , I thrive in New York and want to complete my NHL career here.

You become the league's highest-paid goalie next season , what does that mean for you?
- Well, I do not think much of it. But it is important to have a good contract , it would of course take advantage of the opportunities they have in their careers. But for me, the length of the contract and the relationship with the Rangers more important. And of course , I am delighted with the money too.

How was your day and how are you celebrating ?
- There has clearly been a special day with a press conference and a lot of interviews . And then of course a lot of friends called and subtitled . Any celebration there will not be , we got a game here in Buffalo Thursday night so I 'll have to invite the guys to a lagmiddag in any other city some weeks to come.

You have not been playing the last two games , it has annoyed you?
- Of course you always want to play , but Cam Talbot was good against Vancouver on Saturday, so I understand that he got the chance later to Winnipeg , too. You have to take it the right way , to train even harder.

This week has been tumultuous for Henrik Lundqvist , Tre Kronor perhaps the most important players in the Olympics. Sportspegeln followed his emotional rollercoaster for three days in New York, against a record contract.

Benched again . The headlines were big on Monday. He sat on the bench for the second game in a row - it had not happened in almost three years . Was that a monarch at once ?

After the game had median Cam Talbot in focus. Lundqvist above assessors . When the reporters gathered around Talbot sits the Swedish star goalie a few feet away at his place in the dressing room , alone.

- It's not nice feeling to sit on the sidelines, it would be strange if you think that, at this level . I myself know that I have up . It's important not ponder, do not make too big a deal out of this .

- It has been a challenge so far, says Henrik Lundqvist quietly .

" Been thinking extra "

The following day , he drives a two-hour session on ice, he can train more - it might only positive , he says, of playing fewer matches.

Thinking about you a lot?

- I've always thought a lot about my game and it clearly with this start , there are some nights you 're considering extra maybe.

New York Rangers is constantly påpassat by the media, and even more during heavy periods . Goalkeeper issue becomes large space during these days and coach Vigneault may declare itself time after time . Is there a conflict? Is Henrik Lundqvist's position as the team's one threatened?

A large TV station pulls out målbur , pucks placed in a perfect pattern on the ice , bar stools with reporters , three cameras and Vigneault in the rink in the training facility .

They seek answers to questions they never expected that they would have to provide . Henrik Lundqvist's status as first goalkeeper and the club's biggest star has been unchallenged for nearly eight years.

" Want to finish my career here "

On Wednesday morning coaching the team again . Henrik Lundqvist runs another long pass, he goes on the ice 45 minutes before the rest of the team . The training is followed by an unusual number of reporter 's eyes , and an unusual number of cameras.

The news was then an hour out to Henrik Lundqvist and Rangers after months of deliberations agreed on a contract extension . The extension runs over seven years and is worth almost 400 million. He becomes the NHL's best paid goalkeeper and will stay in Manhattan the rest of his career.

- It was the length of the contract , not the money, which was important to me , says Lundqvist. I want to play a long time and I want to finish my career in the New York Rangers . This is my main contract , perhaps the last .

Lundqvist’s Deal With Rangers Is ‘From the Heart’

ShareThis

GREENBURGH, N.Y. — Henrik Lundqvist said he wanted to be a Ranger for life, and now he will have that chance. The Rangers announced Wednesday that Lundqvist had signed a seven-year contract extension, ending speculation that he might depart when his contract expired at the end of the N.H.L. season.
“I know there’s been some speculation,” Lundqvist said at a news conference at the Rangers’ practice rink. “But from the heart, it was never an option to leave this club.”
The new deal, for $59.5 million, with an $8.5 million annual salary-cap hit, makes Lundqvist the highest-paid Ranger and the highest-paid goalie in the N.H.L. It represents a significant raise from his old contract, which had a $6.875 million cap hit per year. Lundqvist turns 32 in March, meaning he will be 39 if he stays through the term of the contract, which is one year shorter than the maximum allowed by the new collective bargaining agreement.
The importance of re-signing Lundqvist was underscored by the presence of the team owner James L. Dolan at the news conference. Dolan, who rarely attends functions pertaining to hockey matters but who is a lifelong Rangers fan, called Lundqvist “a model of what you want in a player” and said he was pleased that Lundqvist would wear Rangers blue for the rest of his career.
Lundqvist, known for his sense of style — on this occasion, he was impeccably dressed in a well-tailored suit — smiled as he stood alongside General Manager Glen Sather.
“He’s a great guy, he’s a great competitor, he’s great in the magazines, and we’re excited to have him here,” Sather said. “So it’s up to you, Henrik — now just carry us on your shoulders.”
Sather’s assessment was an accurate measure of how vital Lundqvist has been to the Rangers since coming from Sweden in 2005.

In some of his eight seasons, he almost single-handedly willed the Rangers into the playoffs. He has been named the team’s most valuable player seven times. Lundqvist, the N.H.L.’s most consistently excellent goalie, has won a Vezina Trophy and was a finalist for the award four other times, and he has finished among the top 10 in save percentage six times. He also won an Olympic gold medal with Sweden at the 2006 Games in Turin, Italy, and will be his country’s No. 1 goalie at the Games in February in Sochi, Russia.
But the Stanley Cup has eluded him.
“I really want to win a Cup here in New York,” Lundqvist said. “It’s my biggest goal and my biggest dream.”
The re-signing came after a minor controversy this week. Coach Alain Vigneault started the backup Cam Talbot in a second straight game in a 5-2 loss to the Winnipeg Jets on Monday. It was the first time a healthy Lundqvist had sat out two straight games since the 2010-11 season.
But on Wednesday, Vigneault seemed to have put that experiment in the past.
“What do they say — happy wife, happy life?” Vigneault said. “Happy goalie, happy team.”
Asked if he had decided who would play goal in the Rangers’ game at Buffalo on Thursday, Vigneault said it was “pretty obvious I’m going with Hank.”
After a shaky start this season, Lundqvist has registered a .930 save percentage in his last 13 appearances. But he has continued to allow the occasional soft goal and expressed dissatisfaction with his performance. He said again Wednesday that the contract talks were not a factor in his play this season.
“During the summer, I probably thought about it every day, and going into training camp it was definitely there,” Lundqvist said. “When it didn’t happen, for a couple days it was on my mind. But then I let it go.”
Sather said he was talking with the representatives for the seven pending unrestricted free agents still on the roster: the captain Ryan Callahan, Dan Girardi, Anton Stralman, Brian Boyle, Taylor Pyatt, Dominic Moore and Benoit Pouliot.

“In my mind, Henrik was the one that had to be signed first,” Sather said.

Lundqvist’s new contract eats up significant salary-cap space and could make it difficult to re-sign Callahan, who makes $4.275 million in his expiring contract, and Girardi, a top defenseman, who makes $3.325 million. A $4.9 billion Canadian television contract signed last week with Rogers Communications is expected to provide more cap space in coming seasons.

Henrik Lundqvist Signs 7-Year $59 Million Contract Extension With Rangers; Said "I Want To Be a Ranger For Life"

ShareThis

Here's the press conference:

Here's the press release:

New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has agreed to terms with goaltender Henrik Lundqvist on a contract extension.

“Since his arrival in New York in 2005, Henrik has consistently been one of the elite goaltenders in the NHL,” said Sather. “He is a proud representative of the tradition and class of this organization and we are excited to have him remain as a cornerstone of the franchise.”

Lundqvist, 31, has been voted a Vezina Trophy finalist as the league’s top goaltender in five of his eight NHL seasons, having won the award following the 2011-12 season. The seven-time Rangers’ MVP entered the season as the only NHL goaltender with an active streak of eight straight 20-win seasons, and holds the league record for most consecutive 30-win seasons to begin his career with seven straight. He is also a two-time Olympian (2006, 2010) and an Olympic Gold Medalist, having captured a gold medal with Sweden at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy.

In 531 career appearances, Lundqvist has posted a record of 284-182-57, along with a 2.26 goals against average, .920 save percentage, and 47 shutouts. He ranks fifth in shutouts and sixth in wins among active goaltenders, and ranks second in both shutouts and wins in franchise history.

Lundqvist is 8-11-0 with a 2.51 goals against average, .917 save percentage, and two shutouts in 20 appearances this season. Last season, he finished tied for the league lead with 24 wins en route to being selected as a Second Team NHL All-Star. He became the first Rangers goaltender to lead the league in wins since Mike Richter in 1993-94, and, on April 5 at Pittsburgh, became just the fourth Rangers goalie to appear in 500 career contests. In the playoffs, Lundqvist posted shutouts in Games 6 and 7 of the Rangers’ Eastern Conference Quarterfinals series against Washington to become the first NHL goaltender in 11 years to close out a seven-game playoff series with consecutive shutouts.

The three-time NHL All-Star established career-highs with 39 wins, a 1.97 goals against average, and .930 save percentage during the 2011-12 season. Lundqvist ranked third in the league in wins, tied for third in save percentage and shutouts (eight), and fourth in goals against average that season. He helped lead the Rangers to Game 6 of the 2012 Eastern Conference Finals, posting playoff career-highs in games played (20), wins (10), shutouts (three), and goals against average (1.82). His three shutouts tied for the NHL lead, while he ranked second in goals against average during the postseason. Lundqvist was awarded the Vezina Trophy as the league’s top goaltender, and selected as a First Team NHL All-Star following the season.

The Are, Sweden native was originally selected by the Rangers as a seventh round choice, 205th overall, in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut on October 8, 2005 at New Jersey, and finished his rookie season with a 30-12-9 mark, 2.24 goals against average, .922 save percentage, and two shutouts. Lundqvist was selected to the 2005-06 NHL All-Rookie Team and was third in voting for the Vezina Trophy that season, becoming the first rookie to be a finalist for the award since Jim Carey in 1995.

Hi , Henry here. Being a goalie is special. Is it badly affects the whole team . That's fine , it's wonderful . Follow me , I'll tell you about how to live as a goalkeeper , what it means to be an extremely poor loser, and how I exercise and do in order to constantly stay on top .

/ Henrik

Quality over quantity. Hey ! I usually get a few questions about how I practice. If I have any secret. If there are specific exercises that make one a good hockey goalie and if I exercise more than others. I do not, and I 'm not sure that there is no secret . I believe in quality over quantity , and when I train , I try to always keep focused and work really hard . In the gym , but above all on the ice. Late Sun , I think it is important the element of competition and to get training sessions as match as possible. The mental part is also extremely important: that the focus is there and that you are constantly thinking about what you do and what you can do even better. Of course I have not so good days too, where it stops and trying to find excuses. But should you get somewhere and get better you have to minimize those days , and it's something that I think many elite athletes have in common. If you aim to get to the Olympics , one must be prepared to invest the time and effort required , even on the days when it stops. That's the secret might . / Henrik

Have you won once you want to win again! Well, Henrik here! Glad you found your way to my diary. Right now the NHL season in full swing, and I play three to four games a week with the Rangers. Although the course is full focus on this season , I think still a lot on the OS . It's hard not to. Have you won once you want to win again, and I have high hopes for the championship in Sochi. There is only one goal: Swedish Olympic Gold . Through this journal , you will get an insight into what my life looks forward to the Olympics in Sochi. Much as I write here will be about training and hockey. I 'll tell you how I train to be able to perform at the level required , and I will simultaneously bjussa on some training tips for your readers . You will also get news updates from me, where I talk about how it goes for me and my team in New York. Have a good one so far! / Henrik

How Henrik Lundqvist Became a Modern Day Joe Namath

ShareThis

In the rink, Henrik Lundqvist, the Swedish-born goaltender for the New York Rangers, is a hulking presence, athletically and aggressively swatting away pucks with his stick, pads, skates and, yes, sometimes even his mask. On a somewhat offensively challenged team, the 31-year-old–known as “King Henrik” to local fans–keeps the Rangers competitive on most nights with his “butterfly” style of goaltending, which has earned him an Olympic gold medal (for Sweden in the 2006 Turin games), seven straight team Most Valuable Player awards and the Vezina Trophy, awarded annually to the National Hockey League’s top goaltender, in 2012.

Off the ice, though, Lundqvist–slim and possessed of blue eyes, a touch of Viggo Mortensen scruff and a hair-trigger grin–doesn’t quite fit the popular notion of how a hockey player is supposed to comport himself. He has taken well to the various cultural diversions of New York City, where he has now lived for eight years. (He and his wife and one-year-old daughter have an apartment not far from Madison Square Garden.) “What I love about the city is that it’s the opposite of the intense focus of a hockey game,” he says. Two years ago, he and a group of friends opened Tiny’s & The Bar Upstairs, a restaurant in Tribeca. He has also jammed on the guitar with fellow New York sports legend John McEnroe.

But he’s made his biggest mark off the ice in the fashion world, assuming a throne once occupied by Joe Namath and Walt Frazier. He’s attended fashion shows and models for his own Crown Collection, a clothing line that supports the Garden of Dreams Foundation, a charity for special-needs children. Of his own fashion sense, Lundqvist says it took time to develop: “I made a lot of mistakes along the way. “His fashion popularity, he says, is easy to explain. “When you’re a hockey player, if you make any effort to dress nicely, you, um, stand out a bit.”

Henrik Lundqvist Talks Charlise, the Olympics and More in Swedish Interview From Beginning of Season

ShareThis

31 -year-old Henke Lundqvist is nowadays the team's obvious star and Radiosporten hits him when his New York Rangers training a Sunday in Los Angeles, just before their second match of the season.
Lundqvist praises new Jesper Fixed that now makes them four Swedes at NY Rangers (although injured Carl Hagelin is not on the trip) . He likes to have the Swedes around him. He also became a father to daughter Charlise and having children has partly changed Henkes views on hockey and more.
- Of course you get more perspective on things . It is clear that hockey still is incredibly important and winning is incredibly important. But in some situations you do not have time to think about hockey and it can be good, says Lundqvist and adds:
- Like when you get home and dwell on a bad game and then you have to focus on something else and want to focus on something else. Then one's own children naturligvtis quite natural to focus on .
Henry does not usually seem like a sore loser who blames others , but as a man who really seem to suffer from losing .
Is that so?
- Yes , that's true enough. I'm pretty self-critical and the losses so it takes it quite personally , especially as a goalkeeper , it is quite easy to see , I had conceded less goals we had won after all .
- As you walk to himself pretty much . Then we suppose to be quite healthy in their thoughts after match. What was it that was good ? What was it that was so good? It's still a team sport so you can not blame yourself too much. But anyway, I will be sorely disappointed when we lose .
After the game against the Los Angeles avoid Henke be bitter . Win with 3-1 and bunch of journalists gather around goalie.
Everyone talks about Quicks own goal to 3-1 and Henke lide with him, but is self- satisfied . He still seems almost emotionally exhausted after the game but claims he is happy after this victory and winning in general.
- Yes , it's 180 degrees equally unhappy man is losing , as lucky you are to win . It is in this way to build confidence. You could play well and do good things , but you lose so it is always a hassle, and it's hard to be positive.
He is very positive when talking about Charlise - his " Sweet child of mine " ( Lundqvist performed this song on guitar with Jimmy Fallon ) - so far only been to win matches.
- Live handles herself very well, says Lundqvist.
Charlise have maybe a tennis career ahead of her .
- She's got a tennis racket as she goes around and plays with and she thinks it 's fun .
Lundqvist also has a vague hope that she will be interested in music .
- It would be nice if she could sing. Though it would be a miracle , because neither I nor my wife can sing ... at all.
Lundqvist has a couple of other things to ponder on or maybe try not to dwell on right now. This season is interrupted by an OS.
How much are you thinking of that?
- OS will fester in the back of the head . It will have some thoughts now and then about how it will be and how it will look and expectations for himself and the team and all that. But then you are very much focused on the here and now and it's the only thing you can do.
- To get to the Olympics with great confidence so you must focus on Rangers and your own game.
The other big issue is the future of Henke who want to play for long. Up to eight years.
Lundqvist is in his last year of his current contract with the Rangers and he can not talk more about the possible future contract ( which is not yet clear).
- No. I've said ... we 've had a couple of months here in the summer that we 've been working on it . So now I want to put that aside and focus on the game here and then we'll see when something happens .

GQ Magazine Names Henrik Lundqvist One of the Most Stylish Athletes of 2013

ShareThis

3. Henrik Lundqvist
"King Henrik" may be hockey's greatest goalkeep in action, but there's nothing safe about the Swede's style choices. Lundqvist's ever-evolving wardrobe off the ice runs the gamut from fashion forward Calvin Klein Collection gear to the most proper Hugo Boss black tie rigs, both pulled off with equal nonchalance. And any mention of Lundqvist's style wouldn't be complete without talking about that hair.

Henrik Lundqvist to be NHL Reality TV Star

ShareThis

Now comes "NHL Revealed: A Season Like No Other," announced in conjunction on Monday by the league, the NHL Players’ Association, the NBC Sports Network and CBC in Canada, the two outlets that will broadcast the seven-part behind-the-scenes series starting in mid-January.

This reality series will focus on two dozen NHL players across nine teams – including the Rangers’ Henrik Lundqvist and Islanders captain John Tavares – as they play in outdoor games, then go on to the Olympics.

The weekly show will debut on NBCSN on Jan. 22 and continue through the Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.

The Rangers play twice this season at Yankee Stadium, facing the Devils at 12:30 p.m. on Jan. 26 and then Tavares’ Islanders three days later at 7:30 p.m.

Lundqvist won’t be the only Ranger to be followed – the team expects at least one more player to be featured, think a past Olympian such as Rick Nash or Brad Richards – and the organization is already comfortable with the process. They and the Flyers were the subjects of "24/7" as part of the Rangers’ 3-2 win on Jan. 2, 2012 at Philadelphia’s Citizens Bank Park.
