Henrik Lundqvist Makes All-Star History in Loss
Historical Hank
Henrik Lundqvist was unaware that he had entered the record books as the first all-star goalie to face (and stop) a penalty shot. "Wow, so I guess I'm part of history," Lundqvist said after signing the game jersey of tonight's teammate Alex Ovechkin ... who brought on the penalty shot by throwing his stick to try and waylay the breakaway of Matt Duchene.
Lundqvist hadn't seen much of the Avs' sophomore center, so he didn't have much to draw on before stopping the attempt by sliding his left leg out to block the bottom left corner of the goal mouth.
"I didn't have anything on him. I just try to do the same thing every time [on penalty shots]," Lundqvist said. "I just try to be patient and make him make the first move."

Henrik at All-Star Fantasy Draft Event
Henrik was chosen by Team Staal in the 6th round of the All-Star fantasy draft event. I have to admit, I was quite surprised that Henrik's Team Sweden teammate Nik Lidstrom did not pick him.
Random stuff:
- Henrik revealed that he would be saving his best suit for game day.
- Jeremy Roenick said Henrik "is too good looking to be a hockey player."

Post-Game Notes & Reaction
•Henrik Lundqvist made 13 saves in net, and has now posted a record of 21-16-3 overall with an 8-8-2 mark at home. It is only the second time in his last 13 games that Lundqvist has allowed more than three goals.
From Rangers Report:
Henrik Lundqvist:
“They just had all the luck they could have, if you look at their goals, the deflections they had. It just felt like we worked ourselves back into the game and had a really good feeling, but it wasn’t enough. Overall the last few games, if you look at what happened to the team, we’ve done a pretty good job.
“It’s going to be a good feeling to see a lot of the guys back when we start again. There are some key guys out. It’s always a different feeling when you’re missing that many guys. But at the same time, we have dome guys coming up who have been doing a great job for us. I think we’ve done a pretty good job. We’ve been fighting a lot and trying to get points every night.”
On the second goal:
“It was going toward (his blocker) and then it hit one of their guys’ gloves, I think, and went to the right. So, you know, it’s just one of those nights where it just bounced their way, I guess.”
On Brian Boyle:
“He took his game to another level this year He’s strong on the puck and everything about his game he has improved and he;s been good for us. Prust improved a lot from last year. Their line has been the best surprise so far this year.”

Post-Game Notes & Reaction
* Henrik Lundqvist stopped 20 shots through regulation and overtime, and turned aside all three shots he faced in the shootout to improve to 21-15-3 overall with a 13-8-1 mark on the road. He is now 14-7-2 with a 1.80 goals against average, a .937 save percentage and five shutouts in his last 23 games, and has held opponents to two or fewer goals in nine of his last 11 contests. Lundqvist’s 13 road wins leads all NHL goalies, and he is now tied for second with four shootout wins (4-1, 20/23 – .870%).
“It was a great feeling to get this win,” said Lundqvist, who finished with 20 saves. “We had a tough loss the other night, and we’re losing guys left and right, so right now we’re just battling, and these were two big points.”

Exclusive Behind the Scenes Henrik Lundqvist Head & Shoulders Photos
Anna said...
First video:
"I think Swedes care quite a lot about what they wear, compared to Americans for exemple, they are more about comfort while Swedes have more style. When it's about hair I think Swedes style their hair more than Americans do. So it goes the whole way, clothes and then hair. I'm actually not really good to my hair, use a lot of caps and my helmet isn't so good either for the hair, it gets damaged by it. And often I have products in my hair while I have my helmet on so it doesn't get to breath well. But that makes it even more important with a good shampoo. I try to wash it with shampoo a couple of times a week. We shower quite often because of trainings and games, maybe 2-3 times a day, but I don't use shampoo everytime. And I have cut down a little on the wax, when I was younger I used a lot but now I try to be a little more careful with my hair. I don't change style, as you've seen it looks kind of consequent. For some years ago it was more styled maybe, more products in it and I tried to do it with some flow. Hair catastrophes? When I was younger, my sister cut my hair once. That wasn't super good. Looked like I had put a pot on my head. But the good thing about hair is that it grows out quite quickly."
On if he's had 'hockey hair' : "not really hockey hair but I kind of head a little mohawk and a little longer in the back, it was very styled. Too styled. But we all go through such periods in life."
"The first I think about in the morning is probably 'Did I oversleep?'. I almost ALWAYS come rushing into the rink a little late because I like to sleep as much as I can. So I often look at my phone and see 'ok I have time to get dressed and run to the car'. That's the only thing I think about under a season."
"The important thing is that you feel confident in how you appear. Some people can look good even though they are badly dressed or with bad hair because they feel comfortable about it. So it's more about feeling comfortable and be selfconfident about how you dress and look, more than about having a certain style, I think."
How it is to live as a hockey pro?
"It's really fun. I never thought it would be this much fun. You put a lot of pressure on yourself and get a lot of pressure from others so sometimes it's hard to relax and you suffer a little more than you wish you would when it's not going well. But how we live as people, we get payed well, we travel in a good way, we live in a good way, I am lucky that I live in a good city. I feel really good there. It's the mix of all that, I think I'm living a dream, I live the life I've always wanted to live. It's exactly there I want to be."
Second video:
"It feels good to work with head & shoulders. It's a good brand and I wear a lot of caps and helmets so it's important to have a good shampoo and make sure my head is clean and I don't get dandruff that itches so it's an easy choice for me."
And at the end he says 'I take the right decision'.
Thank you, Anna!

Post-Game Notes & Reaction; Lundqvist Records 7th Shut Out of Season Over Maple Leafs
* Henrik Lundqvist turned aside 22 shots to record his seventh shutout of the season, and 31st of his career. He improved to 20-14-3 overall with an 8-7-2 mark at home, and is now 13-6-2 with a 1.69 goals against average, a .940 save percentage and five shutouts in his last 21 games. With the shutout, Lundqvist passed Jon Ross Roach for third on the Rangers’ all-time career regular season shutouts list (31), and moved ahead of Mike Richter for fourth on the Rangers’ all-time career shutouts list (regular season + playoffs) with 34. He is now tied for the league lead with seven shutouts on the season. The seven shutouts also ties Lundqvist’s career-high (2007-08).
* Lundqvist also registered his 20th win of the season, and has now posted at least 20 wins in each of his six NHL seasons. He is the third goalie in NHL history to record 20 or more wins in their first six seasons (Bill Durnan, 7 seasons from 1943 to 1949; George Hainsworth, 6 seasons from 1926 to 1931). Lundqvist now owns the second longest active streak of 20-plus win seasons (six), behind Vancouver’s Roberto Luongo (eight).
Henrik Lundqvist on tonight’s game… “Once we scored our first two goals we took over the game completely. We did a good job. Our penalty kills were really good. It was a great win and a great way to bounce back from two tough losses.”
From Rangers Report:
Henrik Lundqvist said he was rooting for Marian Gaborik to score six goals so it would knock from the record book the five he scored in a game against Lundqvist.
From the Blueshirts Blog:
“Mentally and physically, I feel great,” Lundqvist said. “I can feel a big difference. I feel great. The team is playing really well, I think. As long as I am focusing on my part, we will have a good chance to win because we are always there and we always work hard. That is exciting for a goalie.”
From NYR.com
“It was very disappointing to hear that news about Dubi because he’s been such a key guy for us,” said goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, who stopped 22 shots to earn his league-high-tying seventh shutout of the season -- and 31st of his career -- on Wednesday. “But I think it’s important that we don’t use this news as an excuse for not winning or getting points. This is the response we needed, but we have to keep going because we have a tough stretch ahead.”
From Ranger Rants:
“It was quiet but they got a couple of chances,” Lundqvist said. “I just tried to stay sharp. I wanted to get a shutout and it is a great feeling. The guys in front of me played great.”

Henrik Lundqvist Wants Rangers to Open Next Season in Sweden
Rangers are one of six clubs that NHL management contacted to see if they are interested in starting the season 2011-12 in Europe.
NHL boss Gary Bettman said to SPORT-Expressen that a definite answer will in a few weeks.
- We have contacted a number of clubs and have some thoughts on which team we want to have with us to the Premiere Games autumn 2011. Now a some questions answered, like where, when and which teams are going, "said Bettman.
"Would really fun"
For Henrik Lundqvist, it would be special to bring the Rangers to Sweden, where there can be talk of games in Stockholm and Gothenburg.
- I have so many great memories from Gothenburg and Scandinavium, so it would of course be extra fun if it was a match there, "says Henke.
He was with the NHL Premiere in Prague, Czech Republic, the fall of 2008 when Rangers met with Tampa Bay where.
- It was a fun experience, which I would do if. We'll see what happens in the end. Funny how any time if it matches in Sweden, regardless of what city.
2.27 goals against average
Henke is hot as usual in the New York Rangers, where he has zero six times this season.
He is third in the league goalie in the best save percentage of 92.7 and sixth in the league on goals against average per game.
Henkes figure is 2.27.
The other clubs who have received a request from the NHL lead to open next season in Europe, Anaheim, Buffalo, Edmonton, Los Angeles and Washington.
That Washington with Alexander Ovechkin would play in Russia - Moscow and / or St.. Petersburg - deemed to be granted.

Old Henrik Lundqvist Videos
Shout out to reader Anna, who sent me a few old videos of Henrik in Sweden. In the beginning of the first video you will see Henrik playing his electric guitar with his teammates celebrating the Frolunda Indians 2003 championship ; towards the end of the video you will see him pushing someone into a bathtub and then shaving while wearing his golden helmet.
This video doesn't have sound and is quite long but if you fast forward to around the 8 minute mark you will see Henrik celebrating and then partying after Frolunda won the championship again in 2005.
Another shout out goes to reader Dev for this video of Henrik dancing in Sweden after winning the Olympic gold medal in 2006.
I really can't wait to see him celebrate a Stanley Cup win in New York.

Lundqvist Talks Fight
MONTREAL -- The Swedish Billy Smith, not quite, but Henrik Lundqvist threw some haymakers with his blocker hand at Max Pacioretty that would have made the Islanders' dynastic Battlin' Billy proud after jumping on the Montreal winger following a late second-period collision in the crease in which the goaltender had been knocked down.
"I felt like he didn't try to stop. That's why I went after him," Lundqvist said after the Rangers' 3-2 loss to the Canadiens last night. "There was a lot of energy out there. It's something that happened.
"If I get knocked into but I feel the player tries to stop then that's not going to happen," he said. "But I can't stay calm all the time, and in this building it's hard to stay calm."
Lundqvist was given a two-minute minor for roughing. Pacioretty, who crashed into Lundqvist full boar, was given two minutes for goaltender interference plus another two minutes for closing his hand on the puck.
Whatever.
"I loved it," coach John Tortorella said of Lundqvist's response. "I thought it was terrific. I loved his emotion."
The Rangers have allowed 29 goals in their last six visits here, often surrendering scores in bunches as they did last night in yielding three within 2:44 late in the first period.
The Blueshirts had allowed three goals in their previous three games, winning in St. Louis 2-1 last Saturday, losing to the Canadiens at the Garden on Tuesday 2-1, then blanking the Canucks 1-0 at home on Thursday.
"I don't know if all their home games against everybody else are like the ones we play, but our games here are wild," Lundqvist said. "They get so much energy from their fans. It seems like they're right on top of you, and there are always crazy bounces and momentum changes that makes it hard to stay calm.
"The key is to stay within yourself, but what happens a lot instead is that you try to do too much, and that goes for me too," he said. "You just have to keep it simple and stay calm, but it's not easy."

Post-Game Notes & Reaction
-Henrik Lundqvist stopped 38 of 41 shots, including the last 28 shots he faced, and is now 19-14-3 overall with a 12-7-1 mark on the road. Lundqvist has posted a record of 12-6-2 with a 1.77 goals against average, a .937 save percentage and four shutouts in his last 20 games.
Things really heated up on the ice, though, late in the second, and Lundqvist threw himself, literally and figuratively, right into the mix. Extremely upset after Max Pacioretty crashed into him and knocked him into the back of the net on a rush with 2:13 to play in the middle period, Lundqvist pounced on top of Pacioretty and began throwing punches with his right hand.
Players from both sides jumped into the wild melee, and after a long scrum Lundqvist eventually emerged without his facemask on. Known for his intense, though very calm, demeanor on the ice, Lundqvist clearly had had enough of being on the receiving end of physical play. At the same time, he showed his teammates that he had far from quit on this game.
“I just felt like he didn’t try and stop at all,” said Lundqvist. “Usually I stay pretty calm, but it’s kind of hard to stay calm in this building because your emotions fly, especially when he doesn’t stop. It just happened.”
Tortorella had no issues with what his goalie did.
“I loved Hank doing that,” said Tortorella. “I loved his emotion.”

Post-Game Notes & Reaction; King Henrik Records 6th Shutout of the Season and 30th of Career; Ends Canucks Winning Streak
•Henrik Lundqvist stopped all 31 shots he faced to record his sixth shutout of the season and 30th of his career, and is now 19-13-3 overall with a 7-7-2 mark at home. He has registered a 12-5-2 record with a 1.70 goals against average, a .938 save percentage and four shutouts in his last 19 games. Lundqvist moved into a tie with John Ross Roach for third on the Rangers all-time regular season shutouts list (30), and is tied with Mike Richter for fourth on the Rangers all-time shutouts list (regular season and playoffs combined) with 33 career shutouts.
From Rangers Report:
Henrik Lundqvist:
“It’s going to be a tight race, so every game feels like it matters.”
“It was pretty tough. I was pretty tired going into the third. I don’t know why. But then we played so well, the first 10 minutes it started to come a little more, and the last five minutes was pretty intense. So I’m probably going to sit down for five minutes when I’m done with you guys.”
“It was just a great feeling to get the win and the crowd was really going tonight. It was a fun atmosphere out there. I think everybody enjoyed it.”
“It’s a 1-0 game. It’s so important for us to come up big like that (on the 5-on-3). We made some big blocks. We played really well. They like to go across, but we did exactly what we talked about. To keep it 1-0 going into the third, that’s a big difference. That was definitely a big part of the win tonight, that kill.”
“I think everybody felt it. I think the building got going, too. Especially the way the second penalty came. (Drury) makes a big block and the puck just turns up in the stands. It’s tough to get that as a second penalty, but an even better feeling to kill it off and get going in the third, 1-0.”
On the young D:
“They’re playing well. They’re playing confident. They play with a lot of speed. They’re good skaters and it helps our game, the way they skate and move the puck. We talked about a few things going into this game, about not respecting them too much. They’re a great team, but we definitely played our game and hard work paid off tonight.”
On Tortorella’s prediction that the Rangers would not win a 1-0 game:
“Yeah, I talked to Marty (Biron) about it. It’s pretty funny he said that and then it turns out to be 1-0. But we’re facing a team, in Vancouver, with so many skilled guys up front you don’t expect it to be a 1-0 game. But we did a great job on their top line and the PK came up really big for us in the second period. We just did a great job. Of course you wish we would have killed the game. We had a couple of chances to really, I felt we had (chances to make it) 2-0 or 3-0. But it was more exciting in the end to have a 1-0 lead and the guys worked so hard and blocked shots and be in the middle, where everything happens.”
On measuring-stick game?
“You know, I don’t feel like the top teams are that much better than any other teams. They’re just more consistent. We had a lot of tough games lately. It doesn’t matter who you play. When you play a tough team like this, you know they’re going to show up every night and play really hard. That’s why they’re up there. So it’s definitely a great win for us, but it’s not going to be easier to play Montreal in Montreal in two days. So every night is just a big battle right now.”
On 30 shutouts:
“Thirty’s a good number. Hopefully I can keep it going for a while. But this is a big win for us coming back from a tough loss the other night. It’s so important that you respond right away with two points. We have a great challenge this weekend, Montreal on the road and then Philly at home. Those are two tough games, so this definitely helps us.”
“I just try to battle a little bit more the last few weeks and I feel my timing is there. So hopefully I can keep it going and the guys can keep it going in front of me.”

How Far Can Goalie Take Rangers?
BY TONY GALLAGHER, THE PROVINCE
When a hockey fan in New York is asked how far the Rangers will go in any given season, there has always been a stock answer:
''As far as Henrik Lundqvist takes them.''
In the first couple of years Roberto Luongo was in Vancouver the same could have been said about the Canucks.
But now that's not necessarily the case and, curiously enough, that's the way Lundqvist feels about this surprising edition of the Blueshirts.
"The thing I'd say about our team is that we can beat anybody and anybody can beat us. It all depends upon how focused we are on any given night," says the '06 Olympic gold medal-winning goaltender for Sweden.
"We've got four good lines, a good D and, some nights, we've played very, very well. This can be a good team if we keep improving. We have a very nice mix. It's a matter of how high our level of focus is. Intensity, that's what's important."
Lundqvist is enjoying another solid season with 18 wins -- a league-leading 12 on the road -- a 2.33 goals against average, five shutouts and his assists, one more than Aaron Rome.
But the Swede wouldn't go so far to say it's the best Rangers team he's played on:
"When we had Jaromir Jagr and Michael Nylander, that was a different mix, a different level. That was a while back, a different era."
President/GM Glen Sather and coach John Tortorella have dialed back Lundqvist's workload this year, and some would say it's for the same reason Vancouver is trying to do the same with Luongo.
For starters, Martin Biron has been very good in the backup role with numbers somewhat similar to Lundqvist. After his 73 games last season, the Rangers missed the playoffs on the last day, which always seems a catalyst for change in an organization.
At this rate he'll be around 64 games, his lowest since his rookie year of '05-'06. But his play hasn't taken a hit. And he, unlike Luongo, was named to this year's All-Star Game.
Lundqvist looks forward to seeing the Sedin twins and Mikael Samuelsson, Olympic gold teammates, at MSG on Thursday. Just not on the ice.
''They are terrific people but they're a really tough team to play against. I know we'll be looking at a lot of tape with them being as good on the power play as they are. But it's nice to play some of those teams out west. I'd like to play more of them.
"It would be nice if you played every team in the league twice in a season, once there and once at home. It would mean more travel, but ... would create interest."
Having played as well as he has in New York for so long, he has become quite the celebrity.
"I get a nice mix of it because this is New York,'' he says.
''If I'm around the rink before or after the game I'm recognized and people say hello. But then I can go home and kind of disappear in places where, really, nobody knows what you do.
"And because it's New York and there are lots of well-known people in the city, the people are pretty good. They move along because there's somebody famous around the corner."

Post-Game Notes & Reaction; Lundqvist Extends Assist Streak to Three Games-Ties NHL Record in Loss to Montreal
* Henrik Lundqvist stopped 36 shots and is now 18-13-3 overall, including a 6-7-2 mark at home. He is now 11-5-2 with a 1.79 goals against average, a .935 save percentage and three shutouts in his last 18 games. Lundqvist also registered an assist to extend his assist streak to three games, tying the NHL record for longest assist streak by a goaltender. Two other goalies have posted three-game assist streaks in NHL history – Tom Barrasso in 1984-85 and 1988-89, and Ed Belfour in 2001-02. Lundqvist is the first Rangers goalie ever to record an assist in three straight games (goalie games played, not team games). *courtesy of Elias Sports Bureau
From Ranger Rants:
Not surprisingly, Lundqvist was in a bit of a sour mood (for him) after the game.
“I felt like it wasn’t our night tonight,” Lundqvist said. “They’re a good team with really good speed. It’s very disappointing we came up short at home.”
That said, Lundqvist said he was pleased overall with his game (36 saves) and called it a “goalie’s world” because he was fielding repeated questions about Benoit Pouliot’s winner, which slipped over his right shoulder as he tried to hug the post. If anything, Lundqvist said, he should have kept his chest up a little more.
“I think I played a great game but that’s my world,” Lundqvist said. “If you look at the whole game, I’m happy with the way I’m playing right now.”
Lundqvist said he wasn’t surprised by Pouliot’s shot, only, perhaps, by how hard the shot was.
Lundqvist said that was the more frustrating of the two goals he allowed - after he was knocked on his rear end and pushed into his net on Jaroslav Spacek’s goal, a goal that Pouliot admitted to NHL.com after the game that he had pushed in with his glove.
Henrik Lundqvist is an All-Star for the Second Time; Also Approaching 200 Career Wins
The National Hockey League announced today that New York Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist and defenseman Marc Staal have been selected to play in the 2011 NHL All-Star Game on January 30 at the RBC Center in Raleigh, North Carolina. Derek Stepan will join them as one of 12 rookies named to participate in the SuperSkills competition, to take place on January 29 at the RBC Center.
Lundqvist, 28, will be making the second NHL All-Star Game appearance of his career, having previously represented the Eastern Conference All-Stars in 2008-09. He has posted a record of 18-12-3, along with a 2.33 goals against average, a .923 save percentage and five shutouts in 33 games this season. He is tied for first in the NHL in shutouts, sixth in wins, ninth in goals against average, and ranks eighth in save percentage. He also leads the league with 12 road wins, ranks fifth with 904 saves and is tied for first with three assists.
Lundqvist recorded his second career 40-save shutout in a 3-0 win at Florida on November 26 (40 saves). With his first shutout of the season, a 36-save effort in a 2-0 win at Toronto on October 30, Lundqvist passed Mike Richter, Chuck Rayner and Lorne Worsley to move into fourth place on the Rangers' all-time regular season shutouts list with 25 career shutouts. Entering tonight's contest vs. Montreal, the six-year NHL veteran is five wins shy of 200 NHL wins and one shutout from 30 career regular season shutouts.
The three-time Vezina Trophy finalist was originally selected as the Rangers' seventh round choice, 205th overall, in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft.
HOW THE FANTASY DRAFT WORKS
The Jan. 28 NHL All-Star Player Fantasy Draft will be televised live nationwide on TSN and RDS in Canada and VERSUS in the U.S. at 8 p.m. ET.
A coin toss will decide first pick with the team captains, joined by their two alternate captains, alternately drafting the 36 remaining All-Stars through 18 rounds. Each team will consist of three goalies, six defensemen and 12 forwards total. For sake of fairness in the draft, the captain and alternate captains for each team will consist of two forwards and one defenseman. Also, to ensure that the final draft picks are true selections and not simply predetermined due to position requirements, each team’s three goalies must be picked by the end of Round 10 and each team’s six defensemen must be picked by the conclusion of Round 15.
The 12 Rookies participating in the NHL SuperSkills will be divided by the NHL into two groups of six. At the completion of the 15th round of the NHL All-Star Player Fantasy Draft, one NHL Rookie will be selected to choose which All-Star team his group will join for the skills competition.
