Post-Game Notes and Reaction
•Henrik Lundqvist turned aside 35 of 36 shots to improve to 2-0-0 in pre-season action. Lundqvist has stopped 60 of 65 shots faced through two games, registering a 2.48 goals against average and a .928 save percentage over the span.
Post- game reaction from Rangers Report Blog:
Henrik Lundqvist:
On the difference between this game and the one in Detroit. (you can always count on him for an honest assessment):
“The biggest reason is that they were missing the top guys. When you watch that game (Sunday), to see their first line, they’re really scary. They’re really good. They were not playing tonight, so it’s a big difference to not play against those guys, I must say. But at the same time, we did a great job. We played really solid defensively, and then offensively we created a lot of chances.
“It’s fun to see. A lot of guys with a lot of skill on this team. Definitely more guys that can do it for us, so that’s a good feeling.”
On Stepan:
“He plays very mature and solid. Sometimes when you’re young and you come into (the league) you don’t think and you just play. You just focus on doing everything right. I know when I played my first year, you’re so focused … they always say the second year’s tougher, because you start thinking.”
“I think everybody’s feeling good about where we are right now. We’re getting close.”
On having Biron around:
“What I feel is that I have to play really well to earn my minutes. I want to play, but to have Marty behind me there, he’s a great goalie and if I don’t play well enough he’ll step in. Hopefully that competition—it’s a support, but it’s also a competition, so we’ll push each other to play better.
“I’m not going to focus on a number here, how many I should play. We’ll see in the end how many it will be. But I feel already, just knowing that he’s here and knowing I have to be on my toes to get my minutes.”

Lundqvist Knows Rangers Problem
Lundqvist points out Rangers' problem -- consistency
By Dave Lozo - NHL.com Staff Writer
There's no denying the 2009-10 season was one that didn't live up the expectations of the New York Rangers. The real debate begins when talking about what led to the team missing the playoffs for the first time since 2003-04.
Was it the lack of scoring from everyone not named Marian Gaborik?
Was it a blue line that featured two rookies learning on the job for a better part of the season?
Were the players not buying into John Tortorella's system?
Did the team need a reliable backup goaltender?
Despite all of the reasons that have been bandied about since the Rangers missed the playoffs, what gets lost in the shuffle is they only missed by one point after a shootout loss to the Philadelphia Flyers in the final game of the regular season. That was the difference between experts discussing what's wrong with the Rangers and how they made the postseason for a fifth-consecutive season.
For goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, the reason the Rangers were on the golf course earlier than they expected came down to a one-word answer.
Consistency.
"I don't think we need to be that much better to be in the playoffs. We just need to be more consistent," Lundqvist said. "There were a few games when we just let it slip away. When you think about it, we missed by one point and we easily could've gotten that one point during the year. It's hard to be disappointed about the last game. We went on a good run there the last 13, 14 games. It was more during the year, really, when we let too many points slip away.
"It was a big disappointment. It was a tough end. When you think about it sometimes, it still bothers you a little bit. But you have to turn the page and just move on and get ready for the next season. It reminds you that you can't take anything for granted and you can't expect to be in the playoffs. You have to work really hard to get there."
That's why the Rangers didn't tinker too much with the roster during the offseason. The move that affects Lundqvist the most is the signing of backup goaltender Martin Biron, a veteran who spent last season with the New York Islanders. Lundqvist played in a career-high 73 games last season after Steven Valiquette was sent packing to the AHL's Hartford Wolf Pack and Matt Zaba and Chad Johnson mostly took turns sitting on the bench while Lundqvist carried the heavy workload.
After four seasons in a row of at least 70 games, it looks like Lundqvist might get a bit of a break this season with Biron in the fold.
"He's a good goalie," Lundqvist said of Biron. "It's hard to say now how many games I'd play this year. I'll just keep doing my best to play. If you want to play into June, you need a guy behind me that's going to play more than 10 games. In the past I've been playing 72, 73 games. I think it's a good to move."
But don't think for a second that Lundqvist was begging for time off after playing 4,203 minutes last season, fifth-most in the League.
"I felt good," said Lundqvist, who went 7-1-2 to close the season. "Going down the stretch, I was pretty happy with the way I was playing. But like I said, if you want to play for another two months, you might need some rest toward the end. Hopefully we'll have a good team and me and Marty together can help the team to win."
The other notable signing by Rangers GM Glen Sather was 6-foot-7, 275-pound forward Derek Boogaard, who spent the first five years of his career with the Minnesota Wild as a physical force. During a conference call, Sather said the driving force behind signing Boogaard was too many players crowding Lundqvist's crease and giving him snow showers. Lundqvist said he never felt he was under attack, but he welcomes the addition of Boogaard.
"I think we had guys playing pretty physical, but I think he'll be a great player to have for us," Lundqvist said. "He'll add toughness for sure. I still think we had some last year for sure. To have a big guy like that, he's going to add even more to the table.

Henrik Lundqvist Does Not Have Twitter
From the Rangers Twitter account:
Thanks for asking. We confirmed earlier today that is a fake acct. RT @GasStationSushi: Hey @thenyrangers, does @henriklundqvist tweet?
I knew about that fake account for awhile now. I figured it wasn't Henrik since he had stated in a Cafe Magazine interview that he's not into computers. And then again in a Bauer Q & A when asked about both Facebook and Twitter he said they were "not for me" although he did say he does (or did?) have a Facebook account that he barely ever used.

Lundqvist Shakes Off Early Struggles
From Jesse Spector's Blueshirts Blog:
Henrik Lundqvist gave up a goal on the first shot he faced this preseason. But after a 5-4 overtime victory over the Devils, the Rangers’ goaltender was able to laugh about his sluggish start.
“Just a little rusty,” Lundqvist said on the way to the team bus. “It was a tough start, but I felt more and more comfortable as the game went on. It feels good to start with a win.”
Lundqvist was beaten by Ilya Kovalchuk to open the scoring, a goal cancelled out by Ryan Callahan’s tally 42 seconds later. But after making his first save on a soft effort by a sprawling Brad Mills, Lundqvist gave up a second goal to defenseman Andy Greene.
After that, though, Lundqvist settled down to finish the night with 25 saves.

Henrik's New Mask for 2010-2011
Taken from DAVEART.com's Facebook page. What does everyone think about the new mask? Personally, I am a little disappointed because I wish Henrik would stop incorporating the Rangers old third jersey logo. I have always hated the liberty logo, although I do like Henrik's king crown with his number in the middle. It's cool to see he has his own logo now.
Hopefully, he will reveal another mask later on this season when the Rangers officially unveil their new third jerseys. Since this year is the Rangers 85th anniversary, the new third jerseys (which Sean Avery prematurely leaked on his blog last week) have a vintage, traditional look to them. Maybe Henrik will have a special mask to pair with the new jersey.
Here's DAVEART's take from his blog:
Lundqvist with a king's crown on his new Rangers mask
It's always a great pleasure to create the mask designs for the NHL star and king of Manhattan, Henrik Lundqvist. Together we have developed his designs through the years with strong contrasts and cool 3-D effects, and of course with lightning theme. His new design features his own cool king's crown logo on one side of the mask, while the Statue Of Liberty in Rangers alternate logo appears on the other.

Lundqvist Strong in Afternoon Scrimmage
The afternoon scrimmage was a spirited hard-hitting contest, featuring a string of thunderous body checks. Henrik Lundqvist turned in a very strong performance as his White Team defeated the Blue Team, backstopped by Chad Johnson and Jordan Parise, 5-2.
Lundqvist successfully stopped two penalty shots during the scrimmage. In the first period, he denied Christian Thomas, the club’s second-round pick in the 2010 draft. And late in the scrimmage, Lundqvist made a sterling glove save to rob Ryan Callahan.
Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist didn't miss a beat in his first scrimmage at training camp Sunday afternoon, backstopping his team to a 5-2 victory. The White Team supported Lundqvist’s solid play with goals by Roman Horak, Ryan Bourque, Todd White, Brian Boyle, and Sean Avery. Lundqvist allowed a first-period score to Chris Drury, who rifled a shot to the top shelf of the net, and a late tally to defense prospect Jyri Niemi, whose off-speed backhand shot slipped between Lundqvist’s pads.
Sounds like his knee and groin problems aren't an issue right now. Let's hope it stays that way.

Henrik Lundqvist's Baby Picture!
Apparently there is a Swedish book that features this photo of Henrik and his twin brother Joel as kindergardeners in their hometown of Are, Sweden. They're skating on the sandbox that was turned into an ice rink by their teacher. Henrik spoke about this during his interview at the NHL store the other day. You're probably thinking that the red jersey -wearing goalie in this picture is Henrik, but it's actually not- that's Joel. Henrik is in blue, confirming the fact that he was always meant to be a Broadway Blueshirt!
If any Swedish readers have this book or can direct me to where I can purchase it, I would really appreciate it. I would love to get some more photos of young Henrik on here.
Lundqvist Held Out of Today's On-Ice Drills
From Andrew Gross's Ranger Rants:
Coach John Tortorella reported that goalie Henrik Lundqvist was held out of today’s on-ice skate due to a tender groin but instead worked out off-ice. Lundqvist will rejoin the goalies tomorrow morning for their 8:15 on-ice session with goalie coach Benoit Allaire.
http://blogs.northjersey.com/blogs/rangerrants
and here's an excerpt from a Vanity Fair article that covered the recent Vanity Fair cocktail party Henrik attended:
Last week, we spotted the New York Rangers Swedish goaltender Henrik Lundqvist at the U.S. Open match between Federer and Robin Soderling. When we ran into King Henrik at the Monkey Bar, we asked him whom he was cheering for that night on center court. Although Lundqvist said he is a Federer fan (for his poetic style of play), the goalie had been rallying behind his fellow Swede Soderling. (Lundqvist doesn’t know Soderling, but he knows his coach.)

Limiting Lundqvist, or at Least Trying To
GREENBURGH, N.Y. — The Rangers may not know what to expect this season, but they do know one thing: their workhorse goalie, Henrik Lundqvist, will be playing less.
Then again, they said that last year.
Both Lundqvist, in an interview this week, and Coach John Tortorella, speaking on Thursday on the eve of training camp, said Lundqvist’s workload would be reduced.
“What did we play him last year, 73 games?” said Tortorella, noting that no Stanley Cup-winning goalie in the last six years had played more than 62 regular-season games. “That’s ridiculous — it’s just too much.”
Lundqvist said: “I think that’s the plan — it’s been the plan the last couple of years. It just didn’t turn out that way.”
Last year, Tortorella said he expected Steve Valiquette, then the backup goalie, to fill in more often, but he played poorly and was demoted to Hartford. The Rangers found themselves in a season-long struggle to make the playoffs, forcing Lundqvist to play almost every game.
He played superbly the whole way, including the season finale, a 46-save shootout loss to Philadelphia, 2-1, that cost the Rangers a playoff berth.
“I was ready for the playoffs,” Lundqvist said. “On the other hand, that was mid-April. If your goal is to play in June, it might be better to rest a couple more games.”
Over the summer, the Rangers signed Martin Biron, a reliable 33-year-old backup who has played for the Islanders, the Flyers and the Sabres. “We’re excited about Biron being here to take some of the load off Hank,” Tortorella said.
Very little else about the Rangers is definite — the team’s outlook is “clouded,” as Tortorella put it. Almost every position is in flux.
Right wing Marian Gaborik, whose 42 goals last season were 23 more than the next highest Ranger, remains the primary offensive threat. He will be paired on the first line with another new signing, left wing Alexander Frolov, who averaged 24 goals in seven seasons with Los Angeles.
But who their center will be is unclear. The newly re-signed Marc Staal remains a top defenseman, but Tortorella said he was not sure who would be Staal’s partner.
“You’ve got to give me some time till I see what this team is,” Tortorella said. “There are so many new guys in camp.”
Among the new faces will be three veterans skating on a tryout basis.
Wing Ruslan Fedotenko won a Stanley Cup under Tortorella with Tampa Bay in 2004. In fact, Fedotenko scored both goals in the 2-1 Game 7 victory that clinched the Cup. He won the Cup again in 2009 with Pittsburgh.
Defenseman Alexei Semenov is back in camp after being offered a roster spot last season before leaving suddenly to play for Dinamo Moscow. General Manager Glen Sather told reporters Semenov left because his wife wanted to return home, but Semenov said it was because the Dinamo contract paid more.
Todd White is a 35-year-old center who broke the 20-goal plateau twice with Ottawa and once with Atlanta. But he is not the No. 1 center the Rangers need.
The problem for the Rangers — as it is for so many other teams — is how to fit new players under the salary cap. Staal’s new five-year contract counts as a $3.975 million cap hit, putting the Rangers $4 million over the limit.
One solution could be to send the much-maligned veteran defenseman Wade Redden and his $6.5 million cap hit to Hartford. But “we’re not going to single out Wade Redden,” Tortorella said.
“I’m sure it’s weighing on him a little bit,” Tortorella said. “We need to let this play out. A lot of different things can happen.”

Henrik & The Lucky Winner
From Twitter
rachH984: I met Henrik Lundqvist and won an autographed stick at the @NHL event! Let's go @thenyrangers!
Lundqvist has fun meeting passionate Rangers fans
NEW YORK -- One day after playing a huge role at the 2010 NHL Player Media Tour, Henrik Lundqvist had one more stop to make.
The New York Rangers' goaltender entered the NHL Store Powered by Reebok in midtown Manhattan on Wednesday afternoon to a roar from a large contingent of Blueshirts fans who showed up for Lundqvist's Twitter question-and-answer session with Alyonka Larionov.
One fan had a tattoo on her upper back that featured the Rangers' logo. Directly below it, it said "Grandma," a tribute by a young woman who lost her grandmother -- a diehard fan of the club -- last year.
"That's cool," Lundqvist said. "That's Rangers (fans) for you. I think it's amazing that it's in your culture to root for certain teams. That's why it's always so special to play here in New York."
Prior to the start of the Twitter questions, Larionov had a few for the Rangers' goalie. One was how he spent his offseason, which began in disappointing fashion after the team failed to qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs after a shootout loss on the final day of the regular season.
"I went to Miami to try to forget about the tough ending to last year," Lundqvist said. "It was really tough. We had stretches where our consistency was not good enough. You try to learn something from it, and then you try to move on. But it kept bothering me for quite some time. It was good to relax and get away from hockey."
Lundqvist also touched on New York's addition of backup goaltender Martin Biron, who potentially could cut into Lundqvist's playing time in an attempt to keep him fresh. Biron signed a one-year deal with the club July 1.
"I don't want to sit on the bench, but at the same time, it's a long year," said Lundqvist, who appeared in 73 games last season and hasn't played fewer than 70 since 2005-06. "It's going to be good for me and it's going to be good for the team. The focus needs to be playing in June."
The Twitter questions were eclectic, ranging from the amount of time Lundqvist spends in the kitchen to pre-game rituals.
"I think in the past seven or eight years, I've been in my kitchen maybe five times," Lundqvist said, drawing laughs from the crowd. "I never cook. I think I'm too lazy and I don't have interest. I order in a lot and I go out for dinner a lot."
Afterward, Lundqvist took questions from fans in the store, with the person who asked the best question winning a game-used goalie stick autographed by Lundqvist. Questions varied from how special it is to play at Madison Square Garden to what advice he could give to a young goalie.
But New York City native Rachel Harap took home the prize when she asked Lundqvist which Rangers defenseman he would prefer to help him during a 2-on-1. While just-signed Marc Staal and Michal Rozsival were mentioned, Lundqvist didn't want to single anyone out.
After Larionov named Harap the winner, Lundqvist took a picture with the Rangers' season-ticket holder and then signed some autographs on his way out.
"I'm a huge fan," Harap told NHL.com. "This is very exciting. I can't wait for the season to start."

Henrik Guaranties Playoffs During Boomer & Carton Radio Interview
NEW YORK (WFAN) – New York Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist joined WFAN’s Boomer & Carton to discuss 2009/2010′s disastrous ending, and talks about the upcoming 2010/2011 campaign.
“Being so close, you work the whole year to reach that goal… it was tough,” said Lundqvist about missing the playoffs in 2009. “The couple weeks right after, they were pretty low.”
The Rangers were eliminated by the Philadelphia Flyers in a 2-1 shootout loss on the final day of the regular season.
Craig Carton asked the Rangers’ goalie to guarantee a playoff berth for the upcoming season.
King Henrik’s answer?
“Absolutely… we will. I promise.”

Only the best draw invites to NHL Player Media Tour
NEW YORK -- For Henrik Lundqvist, the commute was a breeze.
"I can see my balcony," Lundqvist told NHL.com Tuesday morning from the penthouse floor inside the swanky Hudson Hotel on West 58th Street. "So it's easy for me to get here."
Physically speaking, yes, it was easy for the New York Rangers goalie to get to the host hotel for the 2010 NHL Player Media Tour, but in reality making it to the unofficial kickoff event to the NHL season requires years of hard work and good fortune.
You have to be good -- really good -- to be invited to the NHL Player Media Tour. Only 20 players, including Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin, as well as young stars Steven Stamkos, Drew Doughty, John Tavares and Matt Duchene, arrived in midtown Manhattan on Monday to be put through two days of interviews, commercial shoots, promotional advertisements, and so much more.
The craziness ends Wednesday, when the players return home for any last minute preparations before camps open this weekend.
Lundqvist came from his apartment on the west side of Manhattan, but Ovechkin flew in from Moscow while others came from their NHL cities. They are here to represent the NHL and give their time to the League's various media outlets and broadcast partners, plus selected external publications.
The idea is for these 20 star players to knock out as much press and publicity as they can to help the League in its marketing and promotion before the start of the season. It's the third straight year the NHL has been hosting players in Manhattan prior to the opening of training camps.
"I think it's huge (to have this event)," Bruins center Patrice Bergeron, attending his first Player Media Tour, told NHL.com. "It's very important and it's good for the League to get exposure, to be shown and for people to hear about it. It's a good thing and a smart thing to do. I think the NHL is doing a good job by having this right now."
Toronto captain Dion Phaneuf came to the first Player Media Tour in 2008, then as a member of the Calgary Flames. He returned this year, and before the clock even struck 12:30 p.m. ET Tuesday he realized how much good he was doing by being back in New York in September.
"The one that I came to a couple years ago was the first one that the League put on, but it was run very well and you got a lot done," Phaneuf told NHL.com. "I guess coming to it for a second time, you know what you need to do, you know a little bit more what to expect. Everything's been run well today -- quick, well-organized, and it takes a lot of the workload off during the season. That's what it's about, getting all this stuff done now so during the year you have more time to focus on the game."
The players have two days to knock out a slew of responsibilities.
Those promotional ads you see on the NHL Network? They're shot right here, right now. NHL.com is interviewing all the players here for stories now and in the future. The NHLPA also is here doing stuff for its Web site.
Versus, NBC, CBC, TSN and ESPN America (the League's European broadcast partner) are here doing interviews, promo shots, commercials, etc.
Crosby and Ovechkin did a photo shoot for Vanity Fair on Tuesday. Sabres goalie Ryan Miller, an amateur photographer in his spare time, is taking Stamkos, Lundqvist, Doughty, Bergeron and Mike Cammalleri out Wednesday for his own photo shoot for Vanity Fair.
On Wednesday, several players will be in studio at Sirius/XM headquarters, and Lundqvist is scheduled to appear at the NHL Powered by Reebok Store in midtown Manhattan.
"I think it's fun," Lundqvist said. "It's fun to meet people, fun to do stuff. I definitely don't mind going out and meeting fans. We have a few events during the year with the Rangers, like casino nights, and I always enjoy that."
While the players are here on business, you're not going to have 20 professional athletes -- 17 of whom are under 25 years old -- ignore the spectacle that is New York City. This week, Fashion Week in the Big Apple, has some especially entertaining and spicy dishes from which to choose, and the players are getting their tastes.
Several went to Yankee Stadium in the Bronx on Monday night for the Eminem/Jay-Z concert, while others went across the river to East Rutherford, N.J., to watch the Jets lose, 10-9, to the Baltimore Ravens at the new Meadowlands stadium. Lundqvist and Evgeni Malkin went to the U.S. Open Final in Queens, but Lundqvist said he left when it started raining and went right to Yankee Stadium to catch the concert.
Eric Staal chose to have a sophisticated evening on Broadway and took in the popular show "Rock of Ages."
"Unbelievable perk," Bergeron said of going to the concert at Yankee Stadium. "That stadium is real nice. Playing in Boston, I've been to Fenway Park, but being at Yankee Stadium was something special as well."
"They put on quite the show," Phaneuf said. "It was the first concert at Yankee Stadium, first time I had ever been to Yankee Stadium. It was something to be a part of. I brought my dad down and we enjoyed the night. It's not his style of music, but they put on such a show that he really enjoyed it."
All of the players are invited to a cocktail party Tuesday night hosted by Vanity Fair editor and known New York City socialite Graydon Carter, a Toronto native.
"I have so much respect for all the players in the League, but definitely for all these players here now," Bergeron said. "I'm just happy to be a part of it."

Henrik at John Varvatos 10th Anniversary Party
Henrik Lundqvist attends the John Varvatos 10th Anniversary Party at John Varvatos 315 Bowery Boutique on September 11, 2010 in New York City.
