Post-Game Reaction ; Lundqvist Makes 26 Saves in Defeat

ShareThis

From the Rangers Report:

Henrik Lundqvist:

“It’s a tough one. I think we played really well as a team the whole game. We had a couple of tough bounces along the way. I felt like they didn’t really have to work that hard to get their goals. But overall, as a team, I think we played a great game and we definitely played well enough to win this game. But, it’s a tough one to get down to 5-on-3 late in the game. It’s a big disappointment.”

On late-second period goal:

“I think I challenged the shot and it hit the boards, hit our D and came out pretty fast. I tried to move from the post, and I don’t know if it hit our D or something, but it bounced straight up. But I don’t think it had an impact. We came out in the third and played really well and took the lead. Going down two men there at the end, that was a tough one.”

On the down-low goals:

“If you look at the first two goals, it was just some bad bounces from our side. That happens. I don’t think they really worked hard to get those two. But they’re a pretty skilled team. On the power play they did a pretty good job getting in front of the net. That’s about it.”

*Henrik Lundqvist turned aside 33 of 36 shots to record the win, and improve his career record to 4-1-0 in season-opening games.

Lundqvist on Stepan:

“We’re really happy for him,” Lundqvist said of Stepan. “Hopefully, he can keep doing what he’s doing because he was really good in camp and tonight, I mean, Wow!”

Henrik Lundqvist Leads Rangers into Season Opener

ShareThis By Jesse Spector

BUFFALO - As the Rangers open their season Saturday night, it's understandable that 20-year-old center Derek Stepan says he is "excited, nervous, all of it" for his NHL debut. But he is far from alone as far as emotions go.

"You're a little more tense, a little more nervous the first game," said Henrik Lundqvist, who begins his sixth season with a marquee goaltending duel against the Sabres' Ryan Miller. "It's been a while since you've played at this level."

Lundqvist enters the season at a high level, having won all three of his preseason starts. His 2.38 goals-against average last season ranked eighth in the NHL, but the Rangers missed the playoffs with a shootout loss in Philadelphia on the final day of the campaign. This time around, he should have more offensive support - the Rangers scored 26 goals in their six preseason games, bolstered by contributions from the newest Blueshirts.

King Henrik Yearns for his Crown

ShareThis
By Andrew Gross

The dream remains for Henrik Lundqvist, lift the Stanley Cup while wearing a Rangers’ sweater.

The franchise goalie enters his sixth NHL season still young at 28 but coming off his longest off-season after the Rangers missed the playoffs for the first time since 2004.

"Every year you have to take it very serious," Lundqvist said prior to the start of last month’s training camp. "Time flies. You don’t have that many years to play. You definitely want to have a good run in the playoffs and, before you retire, you want to hold that Cup. Especially coming from last year, you realize you can’t take it for granted to be there every year and get a chance."

There are certainly no guarantees in 2010-11. The Rangers, who open the season tonight at Buffalo, are not considered among the league’s elite.

But they do have Lundqvist, who last season became the first goalie in NHL history to record at least 30 victories in each of his first five seasons. They also have right wing Marian Gaborik, who established a career high with 86 points in his first season with the team.

Lundqvist on the New Season

ShareThis
From the Rangers Report blog:

Henrik Lundqvist:

I asked if there’s reason to believe this team is better:

“Yeah. I mean, you can only go on the feeling you have. It’s still so early. But it feels like we have a better team than last year. We have more guys who can do the job, I think; more skill guys. I really like what we brought in over the summer, and also the guys who stayed, we hopefully learned something from last year. But it’s up to us to prove it. Asking me now, yeah, it feels like we have a better team than last year.
“Yeah, but we had stretches last year where we played really well, where you thought, ‘Wow, this could be a really good year,’ especially at the beginning. But I say this all the time. It’s not so much about being better, it’s about being more consistent and that’s how you get into the playoffs … and that’s how you miss the playoffs, if you’re not consistent enough. So that’s going to be our biggest challenge. I think it is for every team.”

I said to him that the Rangers didn’t go into the off-season fooling themselves into believing they were one goal short, but rather that they missed the playoffs because of what happened between the fast start and strong finish.

“Yeah, it was too many games we left slip away. Of course we should be disappointed missing that close, but at the same time you can’t be upset about that game because we were 10-2-1 or whatever the last 13 or 14 games. So it’s hard to be upset about our finish. It’s more in the middle. There were games here and there where you remember how you lost in overtime, or late in the game. It’s going to cost you in the long run. So we have to make sure we’re focused for every game here, and pay attention to it.”

On learning from last season, and how that gets turned around.

“I think it’s important that everybody’s pushing each other, every practice and in games, and really reminding everybody how important every game is, and you can’t let one point slip away. Of course you’re not going to win every game; there’s no way. But if there’s a point you can get, you have to go after it. Some games it’s going to be tough to get points. You might play a really good team, you might have a tough night. But there’s nights where you definitely have a chance to get away with one or two points and you can’t let those slip away.
“So you just talk to each other and be aware of it.”

Lundqvist Eyes Cup

ShareThis

By Larry Brooks

The King is 28 now, no longer a prodigy. And for Henrik Lundqvist, who is set to become the first Rangers' goaltender to start five straight season-openers since Mike Richter's run of eight from 1992-1999, that truth is self-evident.
"After being here for five years, I have a greater understanding of the league, and what I've learned especially after missing the playoffs last year is that you can't take anything for granted because you never know how many opportunities you're going to get to win the Stanley Cup," Lundqvist, scheduled to be in net tomorrow night in Buffalo, told The Post earlier this week.

"You have to approach each season with the mentality that it's an opportunity to do something special. We really haven't accomplished that since I've been here. I haven't accomplished that. We've gone one round and two rounds a couple of times, but that isn't good enough.
"I want more."

Lundqvist, who as a rookie backed up Kevin Weekes for the 2005-06 opener before claiming the No. 1 job a couple of months into the season, is the Rangers' linchpin. He is the reason the Rangers will always compete for a playoff spot. He is the reason the Rangers have essentially no chance to ever bottom out and come away with a lottery pick (unless Brian Burke would like to trade them one or two).
Lundqvist has also become the team's de facto postgame spokesman, more given to public candor than captain Chris Drury. A year ago, management was less than thrilled when The King told The Post early in the season that he did not believe the Rangers were, "a top team," and instead would battle for a low playoff seed. Never mind that it was all true.
Now, perhaps more judicious or perhaps simply more optimistic about the crew that will skate in front of him, Lundqvist this week answered slightly different when asked for his thoughts.
"I don't know how the other teams look, but I want to believe that we can finish in the top half of the conference," he said. "It's going to be a tight race again, and it seems like it gets tighter every year from the top to the bottom, but I like this group here, I really do."
Lundqvist isn't delusional. The Rangers do seem to be more unified than they've been since 2006-07. Still, they have much work to do to return to the postseason.
"I want to be the player who is good every night and gives my team the best chance to win every night," said Lundqvist, who in a perfect world will get 66 or 67 starts this year as opposed to last year's 72. "That's the difference in this league, and that's the difference I want to make.
"Missing the playoffs was awful, but we can all learn from that. I don't ever want to experience that again. I want the opportunity to be playing in June."

Old "I Am a Ranger" Playoff Commercial (2008)

This "I am a Ranger" commercial aired right before the Rangers started the playoffs in 08. I loved it immediately, it's actually still one of my favorite Rangers commercials ever. I happened to come across it today and since Henrik is in it I thought I would post it here.
